What: Yekaterinburg – previously called Sverdlovsk after Bolshevik leader Yakov Sverdlov – is a splendid city with an extremely rich and diverse history. It’s located right on the geographical border between Europe and Asia, on the eastern side of the Urals. With a population of roughly 1.5 million residents, Yekaterinburg is the fourth-largest city in Russia, the second-largest city in Siberia, and has often been dubbed the "Third capital of Russia" (after Moscow and Saint Petersburg). Yekaterinburg is also the very place where in 1918 the deposed Tsar Nicholas II was executed by the Bolsheviks and the city that saw the political rise of Boris Yeltsin, the extremely controversial first president of post-Soviet Russia.
